We’re proud to showcase this exceptional project—a complete gut renovation and addition that transformed a dated home into a stunning, modern, net-zero energy residence. With the vision and major design of the talented Shelly Ziegelman of SWZ Architects and engineered for energy efficiency with ZeroEnergy Design, this home is a shining example of innovation, sustainability, and craftsmanship. Most importantly, we are deeply grateful to our incredible clients, whose vision, determination, and trust were the driving forces behind bringing this project to life.

Structural Overhaul:
The project included expanding a single-car garage into a spacious two-car garage and completely reframing the roof across the entire house, creating striking vaulted ceilings that enhance the interior’s openness and elegance. All interior walls were reconfigured for a seamless flow, and the basement was finished with Amdry subfloor panels and cork flooring for added warmth and comfort.

Energy Efficiency at Its Core:
With meticulous insulation and air barrier practices meeting stringent IECC standards, the home boasts triple-glazed uPVC windows for maximum thermal performance. It features a state-of-the-art HVAC system, including an ERV (Energy Recovery Ventilator) for optimal indoor air quality.

Exterior Elegance:
The façade now features modern Hardie and bamboo siding for durability and style, alongside new energy-efficient doors and windows.

Interior Transformation:
Kitchen: A sleek, modern kitchen with clean lines, featuring custom cabinetry designed to complement the home’s contemporary aesthetic. A downdraft vent was installed for the cooktop, ensuring a seamless design while maintaining excellent ventilation.
Bathrooms: The master bathroom showcases a custom vanity and thoughtfully curated fixtures for a spa-like experience.
Living Spaces: White oak floors bring warmth and continuity throughout the home, while cable railings add a touch of modern sophistication. The master bedroom is elevated by an elegant accent wall.
ADA Compliance: The first floor is fully ADA compliant, with hardwood and tile flooring seamlessly integrated without thresholds or bumps, ensuring both accessibility and style.
Trim-less Features: Trim-less windows and doors create a minimalist aesthetic, enhancing the sleek design.

Cambridge Barn Renovation

Ever dream of downsizing in your own backyard? Our Client’s old barn behind her historic 1846 house in Cambridge, Massachusetts, was transformed into her retirement dream house.  
A sun-filled 675-square-foot open floor plan downstairs feels spacious and welcoming under lofty 11’ ceilings with exposed joists.  Some original details were preserved, enhanced and reused, such as the original timber posts and knee braces, antique floorboards and interior beadboard siding. The horse stall windows on the back wall refer to the original barn’s use and also provide privacy from the neighbors. 
The open first floor living space has one partition wall that divides the powder room under the new stair. The architect designed a custom kitchen with cabinet fronts fashioned from the original beadboard; a 16’ open shelf sits beneath the row of original horse-stall windows; and local stone is featured on the counter, island, and backsplashes.  When you walk in the front or side doors the entire space unfolds before you. Eight-foot-high multi-pane doors and windows frame a view of the mature gardens and fill the downstairs space with light.  

Exposed original barn-wood accompanies you all the way up the stairwell to a 425 square foot master suite with a custom glass casement window in place of the old hay-loft door.  This airy bedroom suite has operable skylights for additional light and air. Old floor boards and joists were repurposed into shelving in the exposed linen closet. Efficiency was maximized and every square inch was utilized, with clever details such as  creating storage opportunities under the eaves, and above closets in the lofty ceiling areas.  A stacked laundry unit is tucked into the bathroom.

To celebrate the completed conversion, the barn’s center post is adorned with a massive iron horseshoe unearthed during construction!
